Andrew Santos

About Me

Andrew is a PhD Candidate in Brett Finlay's lab. He grew up in Toronto, ON and received his Honours BSc in Human Biology and Immunology from the University of Toronto in 2013. He completed a co-op term with Dr. Gerald Prud’homme at the St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, where he studied the immunomodulatory effects of GABA in type 1 diabetes. Andrew has always been fascinated by the human immune system, which led to his interest in how pathogens modulate or evade the human immune system during infection. During his undergradute training, Andrew especially enjoyed laboratory courses and found that experience in such courses were some of the most educational. His interest in lab courses led him to serve as a teaching assistant for Dr. Oliver's Experimental Microbiology course, where he was able to mentor young scientists as they developed and published their research in UJEMI publications. Andrew believes that UJEMI provides a series of incredible educational opportunities for undergraduate students: to conduct and publish research in scientific journals, learn and write about current and cutting-edge science, and create educational tools for other undergraduate students.

Projects

Andrew's current projects focus on how enteropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic E coli (EPEC; EHEC) utilize their type III secretion systems to secrete toxic effector proteins into human host cells, where they influence intracellular signalling during infection. Andrew is particularly interested in how EPEC and EHEC interact with the ubiquitin-modified proteome during infection, and how these interactions contribute to disease.
