The Undergraduate Journal of Experimental Microbiology and Immunology (UJEMI) is dedicated to the publication of undergraduate articles in fields related to microbiology and immunology.
In 2001, the University of British Columbia (UBC) launched a capstone course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) program in microbiology and immunology. Since the program’s inception in 2001, the revised articles produced in these CURE courses have been archived in an open-access online undergraduate research journal titled the Undergraduate Journal of Experimental Microbiology and Immunology (UJEMI). UJEMI is a repository for new scientific findings, technical information about reagents and methods, and a growing body of literature derived from undergraduate research from around the world.
With respect to the unique opportunity gap that we believe undergraduate journals should fill, authorship in UJEMI+ is restricted to only undergraduate students enrolled at recognized post secondary institutions. At the same time, UJEMI+ recognizes the importance of publishing high quality scientific research conducted at accredited institutions; thus, to be considered for publication in UJEMI+, we require a formal endorsement from a course instructor or researcher who mentored the student authors. Mentors will be acknowledged in the paper. Published manuscripts include a section explicitly acknowledging this endorsement.
UJEMI has been expanding in scope and breadth since 2014. We have 4 publications:
- UJEMI - original research articles describing projects that are a work-in-progress (non refereed).
- UJEMI+ - original research articles describing projects with clear findings (refereed). These papers are peer reviewed by subject matter experts.
- UJEMI-Perspectives - short educational opinion pieces written by undergraduate students on topics relevant to microbiology and immunology. These papers are reviewed by a contributing editor. (Formally called UJEMI Pearls)
- UJEMI-methods - papers or videos explaining the theory, application, timeline, troubleshooting steps for techniques relevant to work in a molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology laboratory.

In addition to communicating science, UJEMI represents a cutting edge teaching and learning experience engaging scientists (undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, academic faculty, and industry scientists) around the world.
