Julia Huggins

About Me

Julia is working on a PhD in microbial biogeochemistry, researching how networks of diverse microorganisms work together to regulate global nutrient cycles. She is currently studying nitrogen cycle pathways in anoxic marine environments. In her previous research, she studied how symbiotic relationships between trees, mushrooms, and soil bacteria drive ecosystem-level processes. Julia is enthusiastic about science education and outreach, and she is honored to be a part of the innovative learning experience that UJEMI offers students. Julia is also dedicated to supporting diversity in the sciences and believes it is key to actively build a culture of inclusivity in the sciences to address issues of self-selection bias and systematic barriers in scientific training. She is a firm believer in the value of experiential learning. She enjoys supporting students as they navigate the complex process of scientific communication and peer review, and she is consistently impressed with the students' dedication, integrity, and enthusiasm.
